Vendor Spotlight: Vanessa Owens Artist
Here at the Kapiti Indoor Market we love our amazing vendors and today we are spotlighting the super talented Vanessa Owens Artist.
Tell us about your business including how and why you started?
I am a self-taught Artist and I have been painting and creating artworks for about 20 years.
Tell us about your products and what makes them unique?
I have designed a collection of native bird stationary, this includes, art cards, A4 & A3 art prints, bookmarks, native sticker packs and wrapping paper.
I have included an environmentally friendly, screen printed cotton tote bag of a tui, perched amongst the native flax.
My macrame bird feeders are made with love, an opportunity to feed the little bird's by putting a sliced orange or apple into the feeder.
I have included a small range of original water colours from my flying bird series. All my products are designed and themed with New Zealand native bird's in mind.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I love observing nature, either in the native bush, reserves or estuary's. My favourite spot is the Waikanae estuary, the landscape and seascapes are stunning and it provides me with an amazing variety of birds. This gives me the opportunity to photograph bird's in their natural surroundings to bring back to my home art studio and create paintings and artworks inspired by nature.
What do you love most about attending the Kapiti Indoor Market?
I love being able to talk one on one to my customers about my products. I also love meeting other like-minded creatives and being involved gives me a sense of community.
What do you think the most important thing people should know about shopping local?
Supporting local means that you care about the community that you live in. You'll be able to put money back into your community and the other people who call it home, too.
From the the products you make do you have a favourite item and if so why?
Currently I am really enjoying creating watercolour artworks. In particular I have enjoyed painting my flying native bird series, this has allowed for a more spontaneous and free flowing landscape, while still adding in the finer details using ink of each flying bird, which brings them all to life.
Is there anywhere outside the market your goods can be purchased?
I am opening my home art studio to the public for the seventh year, exhibiting my artworks for the Kapiti Arts Trail 2020 (November 7/8 & 14/15).
In exciting news COMING SOON I will have a new website and online store opening, which will allow a wider audience to view and purchase my artworks. vanessaowensartist.com
